Qaitbay Wekala, Bab El-Nasr

Description

Wekalet Qaitbay is an urban caravanserai (Wekala) built by Sultan Qaitbay in 1481 CE in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. The structure consists of three floors, and overlooks a spacious courtyard. On the ground level, are there are spaces for shops. On the upper floors are the limited rooms with mashrabiyyas (wooden screens) used as living spaces for merchants who have the shops on the ground floor. TEC-MERGE has been assigned the restoration and rehabilitation of Wekalat Qaitbay in the first phase and then the second phase included the transformation of the building into a luxury hotel while preserving the historical architectural standards.
